CQ Detail 1

CQ Detail 1

Stitches:

Straight stitch and  French knot

Threads:

The french knot was worked in a hand dyed thread (by me) that is the same weight and thickness as perle 5. the black straight stitches were worked in black coton a broder.

Placement:

This seam is between Piece 5  and Pieces 1, 2 and 4

Type of lace, braid or trim

This row of stitches edges a trim that was found in remnant bag in a costuming shop in London where I lived for a year. It was not long after the Notting Hill Festival and interesting scraps were very plentiful in fabric shops around the district.   The metallic like ribbon that zig zags across the braid picks up the light and reflects different colours.

Dyes

Procion cold water dyes for the cotton thread

Design/colour notes

I wanted the stitch to echo the shape of the V on the braid in order to pull it together a bit as the block was very scrappy. At the same time I wanted to introduce a muted colour otherwise it would have looked a bit dull.

What is the back story?
This regularly published series aims to illustrate and document the hand embroidered seams, embellishments and decorations on my crazy quilt I dropped the button box. All articles are categorised in the projects under Crazy Quilt details which enables readers to browse back through the series.
Free Crazy quilt block patterns
In the process of documenting the seam decorations on this quilt, as I get to each block I am diagramming it out for readers as a free crazy quilt pattern. Links to these free pattern pages are listed on the CQ details FAQ page.

  1. Sharon, I have written to you in a few years (a long time) but I want to thank you for all of the lessons and inspiration you have given me personally over that time. Adding the “Button” quilt to the mix is above and beyond and I thank you for that as well. I am signed up to take two of your classes on Joggles and can’t wait to get started. I always try to find a short-cut when I do CQ and admit I’m a little lazy. I sure hope I can keep up with all the stitching. Thanks again, Maureen
