Section 40 of the Band Sampler

Section 40 of the Band Sampler

part of a hand embroidered band sampler Time to introduce the section of my long band sampler.

I completed Section 40 of  the For Love of Stitching Band Sampler in March of 2009. It is stitched on tea towel linen using silk ribbon.

This part of the sampler was made for a Silk Ribbon Embroidery Class that I was teaching at the time. Each area is a sample of motif worked in the class.

I no longer teach this class as it was purely a technique based class. It was a project based course which aimed to teach people the basics of silk ribbon embroidery not how to design for silk ribbon embroidery. In other words, it was a step by step, do this then that, put this here and that there,  sort of class. It was good for beginners as they had six motifs (one to do each week). It culminated in the last motif the flower ring which  by the time they worked it they had the basics of silk ribbon embroidery under their belt.

I enjoy including aspects of design in my classes and feel that helping people to design their own pieces is what I can offer to people. I guess I see introducing people to designing is the skill I have to give, and hopefully, that skill is of value to the community. Basically I get a kick out of teaching people to design alongside teaching them to stitch. The two go hand in hand for me.

After a couple of years of teaching the class I decided that although it was popular I did not want to teach this class anymore. I do plan to add a few designs and put it out as a book and /or PDF file however because I am regularly asked if it is still available.

I hope over the next few weeks you enjoy seeing the close up details of this sampler.

Size:

The For Love of Stitching Band Sampler is 15 cm (6 inches) wide. It consists of different strips of fabric which are stitched together to form one long strip. It currently measures 24.8 yards (just over 74 feet)or 22.75 metres long and it is still growing!!!

  1. Sharon – I haven’t followed all your Band Samplers, but I really love this one. Ribbon stitching is something I find very beautiful (and difficult to do), and yours is especially wonderful. If you still taught the class, I’d definitely be on the sign-up list! Thanks for the continued inspiration ~

  2. This sampler is so, so beautiful and I am quite amazed by it. I also loved the video about journal keeping – (I am one of those who note down everything – not every day but very often)
Thank you again for this wonderful site, Sharon, it is full of learning possibilites for me.

  3. Hi Sharon, I have enjoyed looking at your Band Sampler, but this one has really caught my fancy. Not because of the ribbon embroidery but because it so clearly shows the progression of the classes. Thanks for sharing, really looking forward to seeing the book/pdf for this one. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and work with us. Juno
