Crazy quilt seam detail 440

crazy quilt block detailThis embellished seam is part of  block 65 of the I dropped the button box Quilt.

Below the red lace is a line of bullion feather stitch which is feather stitch with one of the arms worked as a bullion knot. I found this stitch in Creative Stitches by Edith Johns

The thread is a cotton which was hand dyed by me. It is the thickness of perle #5 and has a very firm twist. I think it was a crochet yarn.

Free Crazy quilt block patterns
In the process of documenting the seam decorations on this quilt, as I get to each block I am diagramming it out for readers as a free crazy quilt pattern. Links to these free pattern pages are listed on the CQ details FAQ page.

  1. Your bullion feather stitch really catches my attention. I haven’t seen it before and wonder if it has a name? I looked in the CQ FAQs for block 65 but don’t see it yet. Adds yet one more feather to the repertoire, once I learn how to do it. Thanks for showing it.

    1. Juno dying thread and lace is no different from dying fabric. You treat cotton thread as you would cotton fabric and use the same dye. The trick is not to tangle them and I have this tip on skeining off threads to dye

and I have this small article on hand dying threads with some online resources in that article but perhaps I could do an update of it as some of what I do has changed sine it was written.

With lace I toss it the dye bath – buttons too can be dyed with Rit
