Section 48 of Love of Stitching Band Sampler

Section 48 of Love of Stitching Band Sampler

photo of needlework samplerI would like to introduce section 48 of my For love of Stitching band sampler which was stitched in January 2010. This is another freeform section. In many ways it is a little like section 45.

It is a return to the idea of using different foundation fabrics to experiment on. I swing back and forth with this idea and even as I write I am attracted to doing it again . Then by the end of the section I want to get back to using one foundation cloth!

I  patched  together evenweave needlework fabric to form one foundation cloth then treated them as a single cloth to stitch the sampler. All the fabrics  were hand dyed and painted using procion dyes and were scraps left over from other projects. Since they were left overs I felt I was not wasting anything by experimenting on them.

At the time I was a little concerned how it would sit next to the previous section of the band sampler as not only was it red, green and gold (Christmas colours) but it was also very regular. I need not have worried as when I stitched the two strips together,  it works.

I think that when people look at the long sampler strip, it has so many types of embroidery, on different fabrics worked in all sorts of styles and colours that it does not look out of place.

If you are a new reader and not sure what I am chatting on about the For Love of Stitching Band Sampler is 15 cm (6 inches) wide. It consists of different strips of fabric which are are stitched together to form one long strip. It currently measures 96 feet 5 inches (2,938.78 centimetres), and is still growing…

I have written about the backstory, describing why it was made, how it was made and why it was made in the Sampler FAQ page.

In future posts I will share the close details of this section and talk about what I did and what stitches I used, talk about a few autobiographical elements and hope people enjoy it. Today I just wanted to introduce the section to readers.
