For the Love of Stitching Sampler – Band 353

Gosh it feels strange to be writing about this part of the Sampler at the moment. I mentioned when I introduced section 26, that just as I was completing the sampler Labour won the election, I stitched it on the panel to mark the date.  We had a then, new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Now not 48 hours ago Mr Rudd departs this roll and Julia Gillard steps into the position.

I am re-thinking this ‘journal’ aspect to the sampler. (If you are not sure what on earth I am babbling about  take a look again at the bottom of section 26) Probably the term re-thinking is wrong it is more a case of percieving the practice in a new light. As the news broke about  Julia Gillard  I immediately thought Oh our first female Prime minister – That must get stitched on my latest and found the pattern between the two events interesting and bit odd. But Life is often like that …

Anyway to get on with this detail of the band sampler.

Stitches

This band of stitching is made up of row of herringbone stitch which is overlapped with chevron stitch.  On the top bar of the chevron stitch I have ‘rose buds’ worked in bullion stitch with a fly stitch base.

Thread

Both the Herringbone and Chevron are worked in DMC perle #8 thread. The rose buds are hand dyed wool that is the same thickness as Appletons wool and the fly stitch is a silk.

Fabric:

Linda, 27cnt evenweave fabric produced by Zweigart

Dyes:

Introducing Section 26 on the For Love of Stitching Band Sampler

needlework sampler of hand embroidery

Band 352 was the end of the crazy quilted section of the sampler and we return to a more regular format with section 26.

Section 26 was finished in November 2007 just as Labour won the election. I stitched the last comment as I watched the broadcast of the count from the National Tally room.

As you can see the sampler was worked on a piece of  27cnt evenweave fabric produced by Zweigart, called Linda. In Australia this is a relatively common evenweave needlework fabric and cheaper than Linen. It also has more body than linen and this why many people like it. I have moods with it. Linen is my absolute favourite fabric but sometimes I am in the mood for Linda.

Many of the threads in this section were hand dyed by me using procion dyes. On a quick glance I would say most of them are cotton.

The whole sampler consists of combinations of stitches that can be used in crazy quilting. In fact that was the aim of this sampler.

Over the next couple of weeks I will talk about each band of this piece which I think crazy quilters will enjoy seeing it as I am sure it will provoke lots of ideas.

Please note

In this series of small articles, I do not be discuss or cover aspects of design as often these are what I teach in my classes.  I try not to duplicate what is on my blog in my classes. Some of the bands in sampler are used to illustrate points I make in the class. Since many of my classes are about applying design, these bands taken out of context do not, I feel give away the contents of the class.

For the Love of Stitching Sampler – Band 352

Detail:

This is the last detail on section 25. Readers who are tired of crazy quilting will be pleased to know that section 26 returns to a normal band sampler format.

This last seam is the embellished the edge of lace which has bean beaded and decorated with detached chain stitch.

Along the bottom edge of the lace I used straight stitches and long tail detached chain stitches worked in perle cotton #5 thread.

Date:

This section of the sampler was worked during 2007.
