Section 36 on the For Love of Stitching Band Sampler

section 36 of the needlework samplerWith TAST 2012 around the corner some people are considering working a long band sampler. Most questions have revolved around what fabric I use and how I chose the width. I have a Sampler FAQ that answers most question.

To be honest I have used all sort so fabrics because the same stitch will look different when worked on different fabric.

Section 36 of  the For Love of Stitching Band Sampler was worked in  January 2009 and is an ideal example of how many fabrics I use. I had a pile of hand dyed and hand printed fabrics that I wanted to use so I patchworked them together in one long piece then set about treating the section as a contemporary  piece of embroidery.

I pieced together 25 cnt linen, cotton flanelette, Aida, hardanger fabric, table cloth linen and tea towel linen. All the pieces have been hand dyed by me using procion dyes.

They were scraps and left overs from other projects and I felt I was not wasting anything by experimenting on them.

Did I like the various fabric choices?

Once I got used to changing fabric count the stitching it was fun. The big advantage is that different fabrics allowed for different needlework techniques so there was always something new to try on another area. This is not to be underestimated. In this section of the sampler I did not take advantage enough of this aspect but I am becoming better at spotting a creative opportunity.
