Personal Library of Stitches

Stitches are a never-failing source of delight. No matter what skill level you have, there is something new to be discovered when you sit down with fabric, needle and thread. Stitches are the visual language of an embroiderer.

It does not matter if your interest tends towards traditional hand work, crazy quilting or contemporary embroidery, this course encourages you to explore stitches your way and to develop your own language of thread.

Throughout the course we will explore surface embroidery stitches and how they are applied to design. The course is suitable for beginners to advanced stitchers as you can work at your own level exploring simple to complex stitch combinations as you desire.

Note: for those who read my blog and have not yet taken a course with me I do not re-hash what is all ready on my blog. In this course people are taught technique within the context of a design practice not simply the stitches alone.

Personal Library of Stitches will start on Friday September 24, 2010 at a cost of 6 lessons for $60. I have more information about this class bellow and follow the link to book

Note: Joggles.com is a firm based in the United States so for those people outside America the commencement dates are US time and costs are US dollars.

Introduction to Silk Ribbon Embroidery

This course is designed for absolute beginners to silk ribbon embroidery. In the 6 weeks we will be covering all the basics from needle types to how to work ribbon stitches into attractive designs.

I have designed 6 floral motifs. It is anticipated that students will work a design a week and learn how to stitch it. The process is phototgraphed in a step by step manner and directions assume no prior knowledge.

Please note: to my regular students this is NOT a design based course but a project based course which aims to teach people the basics of silk ribbon embroidery NOT how to design motifs for silk ribbon embroidery. (Thinks to self I must get round to writing that one…)

Crazy Quilt Class starts in just a few hours!

My next online class starts today (US time). All the details and where you can book the class are here and you still have time to book.

Now that is the sales pitch but seriously if you enjoy this blog you will probably enjoy this class too!

What is in the class?

The Crazy quilting class is 6 weeks long and offers students the opportunity to piece, develop and hand embellish a crazy quilt block. Each week we touch on techniques of hand embroidery, beading and explore different embellishing techniques

One of the delights of crazy quilting is that there are no rules. This is a liberating and fun style of quilting but it can be daunting as to where to start. Encrusted Crazy Quilting guides students through the process while solving design, composition and colour issues. This class is suitable for beginners to intermediate crazy quilters.

If you decide to take this class I hope to see you in the joggles forum they are fun!

Don’t forget my newsletter!

Two weeks to go to my online crazy quilting class

Hi all just a reminder as it is only two weeks before my online class on crazy quilting starts.

How do the classes work online?

If you have not taken a class online before all classes are run from Joggles.com.

There are two components of online classes, the lessons, and the forum. The lessons are in PDF document a format and each week are disseminated to the students by joggles.com.

Each student is given a User ID and password as well as the URL to the class webpage where they can download each lesson. There is a one lesson per week. I have designed the lessons so that people can work at them as much or as little as they choose. Some people have more time to put into them others do not. I understand this, for this reason I have designed the lessons to be self paced.

Students download each lesson weekly and progress through the class. They can choose to just do a few hours stitching or more. It’s up to the student.

Each student is invited to register at the forums, which is where all class communication takes place. While not real time chat, you can post messages. I check the forum daily to answer questions and join in on the chat. Students can post images of their work online so I can give them feedback. Participation in the forums is totally voluntary but I think this is the fun part of the process.

Sumptuous Surfaces starts tomorrow!

Just a reminder Sumptuous Surfaces  will start tomorrow!

Sumptuous surfaces explores highly textured free form contemporary hand embroidery while also developing design skills. Students design and make two or three small hand embroidered panels.

If you are hesitant about designing your own projects, you are offered a choice of a pattern to follow, or use as a jumping off point.

Experienced stitchers are actively encouraged to jump in and design their own piece.

This means the course is suitable for beginners to advanced stitchers as you can work at your own skill level.

Throughout the six week course key concepts in design are covered such as, composition, shape, geometrical and organic shape, space, handling positive and negative space, scale, density, weight, line, movement, direction and texture.

All my courses are written to be used long after the course is finished. I understand that sometimes life gets in the way and some students are not able to stitch along in the 6 week period. For anyone who finds themselves in this position the teaching material provided will enable you to work through the ideas in a self paced manner.
