Have you ever thought

Have you ever thought

In the supermarket aisles I had one of those moments where you stop and think about the creative contribution of graphic designers to our culture. I don’t pay a lot attention to packaging, labeling and general presentation unless it is particularly good or particularly bad. Stepping into someone else’s shoes for a moment, I thought about what it would be like if I was the designer who produces the graphics for the little motifs that are on toilet rolls. Just thinking of what people do to your work would make me question if I had taken the right direction in life. Then I realised how seriously we all take ourselves sometimes, smiled and moved on down the isle a sense of humour would be a definite requirement.

  1. This is in no way a dig – but I laughed when you wrote ‘supermarket isles’ rather than aisles (which is what we’d write in Britain). I laughed not at the different spelling but because it always strikes me when we go to a big supermarket that they are like little islands all on their own. They seem a world a part from the rest of my unordered, messy, not full of calming music life! So, I too think of them as Supermarket Isles (but without all the lovely sea breezes that word denotes!). Thanks, you made my day. 🙂

  2. I had a chuckle at this one! I have occasionally wondered about these mystery ‘designers’ myself, and at the same time, felt no guilt whatsoever about using their scribbles for the intended purpose!
