Since I turn 51 today Jerry decided to treat me to a really good fountain pen. There is a bit of a back story to this but the short version is that the pen I currently use needs a new nib as I have used it so much it now scratches the page. If I look at the nib under magnifying glass I can see its worn flat with use. It is a Elysee pen which is a French brand that went out of production in 2000. Now I have done things like haunt ebay for nibs but pen collectors seem to snap them up. I have also made enquiries from various pen dealers about getting a nib but it has been in vain. I have used this pen every day for well over a decade so it is with much reluctance that I admitted I need a new one.
Since pens are such personal things we went shopping together yesterday. Canberra has Sunday trading so we rode the bike into the city (it sure beats battling for a parking spot) had breakfast out, then fortified with coffee we went shopping. After much peering thorough glass cabinets, balancing in the hand, testing with ink, and me dithering around because pens are so expensive this was countered by Jerry pointing out that a fountain pen is something I use every day. For that reason he argued it is worth buying a good pen.
After much thought I chose a Visconti. It is yet to become the familiar friend my old pen is but it feels great to write with, glides across the page and I will certainly enjoy it.
I discovered this story from Mary in my email box this morning I was totally touched to think of possible friendships so far away. It has put a huge smile on my face.
Now on a totally silly note as I don’t often indulge in these things. Be patient it’s my birthday and a little self indulgence is OK.
