Free needlework books online

I have often pointed readers to the University of Arizona’s On-Line Digital Archive of Documents on Weaving and Related Topics as it is a huge and marvellous resource. For anyone who is not familiar with it do grab a cuppa and check it out particularly the book section as there are many titles online, free for the download. You can see a sample page before you download the PDF files.

So far this month there are three titles that will be of particular interest to readers here. The 1922 edition of Italian Drawn Work and Antique Filet Lace is available in PDF format and so is Thérèse de Dillmont’s Assisi Embroideries which is part of the DMC Library. For tatters, 1921 edition of Nellie Hall Youngburg’s Forty Original Designs in Tatting, was also made available this month.

I have been a bit remiss lately in checking their monthly page for news about what has been put online so browsing through the last few months I discovered some more gems. I nearly missed Leigh Ashton’s Samplers Selected and Described with an Introduction. Published in 1926 this is a delight for sampler enthusiasts. The book is divided into 7 PDF files. This can be found on their Documents added in May section

While on that page don’t miss Ethel Bolton’s American Samplers at 553 pages it too is divided up into 8 PDF files. And don’t miss Candace Wheeler’s The Development of Embroidery in America.

Now that is more than enough reading/browsing for one day so I am off it’s the weekend … turns and waves … see you

  1. Thanks for both the last two posts, Sharon. U of A is my alma mater, and they have several wonderful resources that I love. I’d forgotten about this one entirely!
