Palestinian embroidery motifs

Motifs used in Palestinian embroidery hold meanings for those in the culture. This site about this traditional form of stitching  has illustrated traditional patterns  with delightful names such as  ‘moon with feathers’, ‘old man’s teeth’, ‘bachelor’s cushion’, ‘the baker’s wife’. The designs are made up predominantly from geometric and abstract patterns (triangles, eight pointed stars, chevrons, squares, lozenges) with some representational motifs.

The patterns are easily worked in cross stitch and straight stitch and build up into pleasing patterns.

For those interested in textile heritage, traditional embroidery, costume or cross stitch will find the Palestinian embroidery site and its free patterns interesting.
