For the Love of Stitching Sampler – Band 100

By sheer chance look at what is my 100th detail in this series. Has to be a good omen of sorts for the 100.

This area was created using all sorts of stitches against a pulled thread background. The pulled back ground is Wave stitch (I could not resist as the whole area had a marine theme) The top area is threaded running stitch worked in various threads. The textured area is made up of buttonhole wheel stitch, cast on stitch, double cast on stitch, French knot, drizzle stitch,  Casalguidi  stitch, Oyster stitch and bullion knots. The crab was outlined in stem stitch.

Thread:

A mix of hand dyed threads were used in this section. I actually dyed them all on the same day (in fact many for this section of the sampler were dyed on the same day) Threads used are hand dyed  perle thread #5, and #8, hand dyed mercerised cotton, hand dyed cotton chenille, and hand dyed wool which is about the same weight as Appletons. A hand dyedsoft Danish cotton which feels and works up in a similar way to coton a broder and is matt with no sheen. It is approximately the same thickness and weight as perle 8.

Three types of hand dyed silk and hand dyed lampshade fringing which I unpulled to dye as it is very like Bunka thread. Also the running stitch was threaded with hand dyed textured knitting yarns as they have a knobbly texture to them.

Dyes:

Procion cold water dyes for threads that consist of natural fibre such as the cotton, wool and silk threads and disperse dyes (also known as transfer dyes) on the synthetic threads such as lampshade fringing.

Beads:

Pony beads were wrapped in silk thread and added to the textured areas. seed beads and small roundels are tucked in between the heavily textured stitches.

Size:

All samples are 15 cm (6 inches) wide and stitched together in one long band sampler.

The sampler is currently 44 ft 5 inches or 533 inches (1353.83 centimetres) or 14.8 yards (13.53 metres) long and still being added to.

Date:

This section of the sampler was worked in April 1998
