Waved Chain Stitch Tutorial

Hand embroidery stitches

I discovered Waved chain stitch  in Edith John’s Creative stitches (p.44) It is a member of the chain stitch family and another form of Triple chain stitch.

Waved chain stitch can be easily worked in a circle or you can emphasise the wave effect by angling the needle further left or right. It can be given a contemporary twist if you work it slightly thicker thread or weave ribbon through it. Another thing you can so is to add beads. It is a fun, versatile stitch that also can be layered in a freeform manner to build up interesting textures.

How to hand embroider Waved Chain Stitch

Waved chain stitch step 1Begin with a small chain stitch. Bring the working thread up through the fabric and take a small bite of the fabric with the needle. Wrap the thread under the needle as illustrated.

With the thread still wrapped under the needle point pull the needle through the fabric to make your first small chain stitch.

Waved chain stitch step 2Take a larger bite of the fabric with the needle inserted at the top of the stitch. Take the needle down close but not at the same point where the working thread first emerged. Have the needle emerging from the fabric lower and to the right of the first stitch.

Waved chain stitch step 3Wrap the thread under the needle point and  pull the needle through the fabric.

Take the needle back up to the top of the stitch and take a larger bite of the fabric, bringing the point of the needle below and to the right of the previous stitch as illustrated in the picture. This is the first ‘wave’ of the stitch.

Waved chain stitch step 5To start of the second wave, make a chain stitch emerging from the last loop. In other words add a chain stitch.

Waved chain stitch step 6Insert the needle next to the top of the chain stitch and take a bite of the fabric.  As with the first wave stitch bringing the point of the needle below but  to the left of the line of the stitch as illustrated.

With the thread wrapped under the needle point pull the needle through the fabric.

Bring the needle up through the fabric  to tae a bite of the fabric. Take the needle through the fabric and bring the point of the needle out below and to the left of the line of the stitch as illustrated in the picture.

With the thread wrapped under the needle point pull the needle through the fabric to form the second wave of the line.
