Help me choose a quote

I promised I would share a few photos taken on my trip and I have been thinking about how I am going to record the experience on my band sampler. So I have taken some time out this morning to jot down record a few thoughts here. Luckily throughout I kept a journal as we saw so much I am already having to refer back to it!

As readers know I was honoured to teach at Maureen Greeson’s Adventure in Crazy Quilting. After the event I met up with Jerry in Washington and then we both flew to Frankfurt to take a break. Our hotel was not far from the old part of town and market area and walking not the heart we noticed Goethe House.

Goethe House was the family residence of the Goethe family, until 1795. The  house of the famous writer is now a museum which is interesting if you are a literature lover but I enjoyed the craftsmanship on display too.

This piece of furniture caught my eye because of the inlaid geometric patterns on all surfaces.

Quilters will recognise many of these patterns and ever since I finished the diamond block quilt I have been looking more closely at these type of traditional patterns.

Each surface had a different pattern on it.

There were lots of details in the house I enjoyed including this wallpaper. It looked hand painted.

Of course I am going to have to stitch like crazy to add these stories to my band sampler, so I have been playing with these photos as images that could be interpreted in stitch.

This is what I thought could run down the edge of my sampler.

If anyone else can use it feel free to, just do the right thing, personal use and please credit me.

Beside it I want a quote. Trouble is I have collected a few so I  am trying to narrow it down. Perhaps you can help me decide.

This quote is appropriate particularly when you remember that the language we constantly heard was German and I dont speak it!

“A person hears only what they understand.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

This I like as a philosophy.

“As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

This quote is good for any teacher and since I had just been teaching I feel it is appropriate.

“Correction does much, but encouragement does more.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

This is another I like too and possibly one that fits a blogger!

“Every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and, if possible, speak a few sensible words.”

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Anyway do you have any ideas? Which is best for my band sampler?

  1. I like the encouragement does more quote, as you have done this for so many people includig me! I really miss TAST2! All the best wishes for everything you do in the future, may all that you've given be returned to you twofold!

  4. I like the last quote best. "Every day we should hear at least one little song, . . . " It speaks to me of joyful living and it goes nicely with the beautiful work you create.

  5. What a lovely post. I really like the second quote about trusting yourself. I do believe the more faith you put in yourself, the more faith others will have in you.

  6. I like the fourth quote the best, even though it is longer. It’s a lovely thought that matches the loveliness of the (wonderful) floral design. And it talks about appreciating art (in its various forms) in our daily lives. It strikes me as being a mirror image to your band sampler, which is your art appreciating your daily life. Hugs, Cathy

  7. Hi Sharon
For me, thinking about the classes I took from you at the Adventure, the "……encouragement does more" certainly applies to you with your students. And I think you need a second quote for the rest of your trip.

    All the best
    Diane

  8. "Correction does much, but encouragement does more."

Isn't this what you do on a daily basis? Encourage us to try new things, to expand our knowledge, tempt us with eye candy and classes? This IS you!

  9. Oh! That desk is just beautiful. I always look at patterns, too, and more so since your class. And thanks for the stitching pattern and all the others while you were gone.

I cannot help choose you. As I read them, it seems that to apply one needs to be a very personal choice. Which aspect to you want to focus on? Another alternative might be to use all the quotes as a border that wraps up your whole experience of both teaching and traveling and blogging about it all. Hmmm… in a way, your sampler is like a blog — in the language of stitches.

  10. All the quotes are great, but I particularly like the one which refers to teaching- Correction does much, but encouragement…." Perhaps you could use it for one section pertaining to our wonderful time in CT., and another further down to represent the rest of your trip??
