Fall issue of Crazy Quilt Quarterly

Crazy Quilt Quarterly coverCrazy Quilt Quarterly is a e-magazine produced by Pam Kellogg of Kitty and Me. The latest issue was released a few day ago. It is a 40 page, eye candy rich publication that contains, interviews with crazy quilters, patterns, tips and tutorials.

What is inside the magazine? There are some hexagon patterns that are pieced using the sew and flip method and Betty Pillsbury has provided a pattern for block embellishment. An interview with Kathleen McConnell makes for interesting reading. There is an article in ongoing series written for beginners that introducing using the basic hand embroidery stitches.

There is an autumnal theme throughout the issue with Pam Kellog providing a blackwork Maple Leaf pattern and a cross stitch pumpkin that you can stitch on a block with the aide of use waste canvas. Linda Dean has also provided a pattern of a leaf that is highly suitable for any fall themed block and Rowena Light has written a tutorial on making some autumn leaves using Lutradur, sheer polyester organza and metallic fabric. Lisa Boni has a tutorial on crating a 3D pumpkin.

A spider and web on crazy quilt block is supposed to bring good luck. This tradition dates back to the Victorian era and I have always enjoyed adding them to a quilt. After years of following this tradition, adding a single spider has developed into also including all sorts of bugs and critters on a crazy quilt block particularly if it has garden theme. I am always looking for ideas on how to stitch interesting spiders in their webs. There are some wonderful examples in this issue and tips on making interesting spiders. As Critters go however, Gerry Kruger’s Chipmunk, rodent, bunny creative adaptions made me smile. I also liked Kathy Shaw’s pattern for a fox

Another article that will be of interest as everyone seems to be discovering the pleasure of shibori ribbon is a piece by Brenda Sandusky who has described how she incorporates using Shibori ribbon on a crazy quilt block. Also for those who collect sewing tools there is an article All about Thimbles.

The Fall issue of Crazy Quilt Quarterly also features some of my blocks. I am not affiliated with the publication in any way, nor do I gain financially from reviewing it.
