TAST Week 7

sample of detached chain the lazy daisy stitch 2For TAST Week 7 2019 I am introducing  Detached Chain stitch. Many people know detached chain as Lazy Daisy stitch because stitchers have long enjoyed using this stitch to create the petals of little flower motifs. Detached chain is a fun stitch that is quick and easy to do.

My Tip! The trick is to not pull the stitch too tight. A tight tension will pull the curve of the stitch into a tighter line.  In other words you will create thin petals to your daisies. Keep the tension a little loose but not so loose they are floppy and you will have generous flower petals. The sample at the top of the page consists of 3 detached chain stitches worked in fine wool. I have placed two straight stitches between the detached chain stitches and then topped the motifs off with a little seed bead. The fabric is a hand dyed Aida.

Beyond TAST Week 7

For those who have done TAST before, or if you already know the basic embroidery stitches, join in on the Beyond TAST challenge.

Week 7 for Beyond TAST is actually two stitches Barred Chain and Alternating barred chain. As a variety they are so close, I have grouped them together. Once you have the hand action of one you have it for the other too so I am sure people will enjoy playing with both. Visit the tutorials for  Barred Chain and Alternating barred chain.

Both Barred Chain and Alternating barred chain  follow a curved line well and make wonderful spiky twiggy bits in floral motifs and organic flowing  sprays of flowers and greenery. Once again these are stitches that have hidden talents and until you try them you wont discover them. There are not many stitches that are linear and highly textured but these are one of them.

How to join TAST and where to share week 7

If you are new to hand embroidery the challenge is to learn the stitch and share what you have learnt. If you are an experienced embroiderer, enjoy Beyond TAST and give your work a modern twist and share it online so beginners can see what can be done with a little imagination.

Stitch a sample, photograph it, put in online on your blog, or share it in the Take a Stitch Tuesday Flickr group, or in the TAST facebook group or where ever you hang out online. Hashtags are #TASTembroidery and #PintangleTAST on places like Instagram etc. If you have a blog leave a comment on the stitch page In other words if you are doing TAST Detached Chain or if you are doing Beyond TAST either  Barred Chain and Alternating barred chain. Don’t forget your full web address, including the the HTTP part of the web address so that it becomes a live link. It means people can visit your site and see what you have done.
