It’s time to go out and buy some more printing ink as in my constant trawling I have found another gem which I think readers will enjoy.
The full and wordy title is A Treatise on Embroidery, Crochet and Knitting with illustrations adapted to the use of M.Heminway and Sons’ Wash Silks (Oriental Dyes).
This little gem was published in 1899 and is available in 4 parts from the Antique Pattern Library.
This is a bit eye candy heavy but I hope people will realise that there are some real gems and it is very worth while trawling these archives to discover them.
I am also going through dozens of PDF files I have down loaded at various times and printing them out as I have found that leaving them on the computer means they get forgotten if I am not careful. (This means expect a few more reviews over the next couple of weeks)
The Antique Pattern Library has divided this book into 4 PDF files so you will need Acrobat Reader to open and read these files. You can download a free reader on the Acrobat site.
A Treatise on Embroidery, Crochet and Knitting is as I have said a gem. For embroiderers you will discover a number of different combination stitches in the first section of the book (PDF 1). You can see the influence of crazy quilting. I think crazy quilters will find PDF 1 particularly interesting.
Apart from some really lovely embroidery patterns also included in this section are some alphabets whichare always handy. In the second PDF file there are some fantastic designs for ‘thread painting’ which look as if they are classic botanical illustrations.
Sorry about the heavy eye candy but there is some very nice material in this book.
Also in part 2 from page 56 onwards there is small section on Drawn thread work. Probably the section in Dillmonts’s book is either the same or better as it is more comprehensive but it is interesting to note it is there.
In the third PDF file crochet and lace are covered. Included is a some patterns for baby booties and caps which I am sure if worked in contemporary colours in contemporary thread would be great.
The last PDF file covers knitting. Since I am not a knitter I can not really say how useful some of these patterns are but I did like some of the sock patterns.
