Bosnian Stitch is a quick easily worked stitch forming a zig-zag line. You can work it in a line, on a border, or over a crazy quilt seam or row upon row to become a filling stitch. Since its structure is a simple zig-zag line it is great fun to build up geometric designs in a patterned fill. You can also use it a couching stitch to hold interesting textured threads to your embroidery. Another use is over the seams of clothing as part of a visible repair project. For instance Bosnian Stitch looks great stitched in a contrasting colour over the seams of jeans or around the edge of a pocket. You can work this stitch on even weave fabric or if you mark the fabric with a dissolvable or air-erasable pen you can use it on just about any material.
Bosnian Stitch is also known as a Fence stitch and Barrier stitch.
How to work Bosnian Stitch
You work Bosnian Stitch in two journeys.
Work a row of evenly spaced vertical straight stitches.
On the return journey, work diagonal stitches that emerge from the top of one straight stitch and enter the cloth at the base of the next straight stitch.
That is all there is to it, as you can see on this finished row of Bosnian stitch it is quick and simple to work.

Thread Twisties!
Experimenting with different threads can be expensive. You would normally have to buy a whole skein of each type of thread. My thread twisties are a combination of different threads to use in creative hand embroidery. These enable you to try out stitching with something other than stranded cotton. For the price of just a few skeins, you can experiment with a bundle of threads of luscious colours and many different textures.
These are creative embroiders threads. With them, I hope to encourage you to experiment. Each Twistie is a thread bundle containing silk, cotton, rayon and wool. Threads range from extra fine (the same thickness as 1 strand of embroidery floss) to chunky couchable textured yarns. All threads have a soft and manageable drape. Twisting them around a needle makes experimental hand embroidery an interesting journey rather than a battle. Many are hand dyed by me. All are threads I use. You may find a similar thread twist but no two are identical.
