Briggs & Co.'s transfer opening page

While poking around the Internet Library I struck gold and found Briggs & Co.’s patent transferring papers which is out of copyright. For anyone interested in vintage hand embroidery designs or if you do crazy quilting and want to add some motifs to your patches it’s a real gem. I also love the opening page!

The publication date is 1880. This means the designs are all traditional classic embroidery motifs. I have shared a few of their designs here to give you a taste of what the book contains.

If you wanted to modernise the patterns you can easily simplify the design by leaving out parts. In other words have less leaves or leave out part of a flower spray and you have a modern design.

One of the download options is a pdf file, which means you can keep this gem. Briggs & Co.’s patent transferring papers is listed in the catalogue as having 184 pages but the pdf I downloaded has 210 pages. I didn’t mind in the least because 90% of the designs in this book would look great incorporated in to projects either adapted or as is!

Thread Twisties!

Experimenting with different threads can be expensive. You would normally have to buy a whole skein of each type of thread. My thread twisties are a combination of different threads to use in creative hand embroidery. These enable you to try out stitching with something other than stranded cotton. For the price of just a few skeins, you can experiment with a bundle of threads of luscious colours and many different textures.

These are creative embroiders threads. With them, I hope to encourage you to experiment. Each Twistie is a thread bundle containing silk, cotton, rayon and wool. Threads range from extra fine (the same thickness as 1 strand of embroidery floss) to chunky couchable textured yarns. All threads have a soft and manageable drape. Twisting them around a needle makes experimental hand embroidery an interesting journey rather than a battle.  Many are hand dyed by me. All are threads I use. You may find a similar thread twist but no two are identical.

You will find my thread twisties in the Pintangle shop here.

  2. What a wonderful resource!! It took me a minute to figure out how to use the designs… I ended up downloading the PDF and storing it my Google drive. Not sure I will use these, but I LOVE having them available; you just never know what you’ll need some day in the future!
    Thank you!!
