I have 2 details of my band sampler to share with readers today because they are both similar stitches.
Both these areas are at the bottom of section 48 of my “For Love of Stitching” band sampler which you can read about further if you follow the link
Regular readers will remember that with this section I patch worked together different foundation fabrics.
Thread, Fabric and Stitches Used on detail 648:
This is rice stitch. I love doing this stitch in free form manner as you can see. I have always wanted to do a bag in this stitch and its varieties as the two layers of stitching can be lots of fun and it is easy to produce interesting layered effects.
I worked on hand dyed 25cnt linen using stranded cotton floss, perle #5 cotton, Perle#8 cotton, wool, and hand dyed silk.
Below is a closer detail
Thread, Fabric and Stitches Used on detail 649:
This is a variety of the Rice stitch and is called Elongated rice stitch. Both are needlepoint or canvas stitches but I work them on fabrics like linen and aida rather than canvas usually because that is what I have to hand!
This time the fabric is a dark blue aida cotton. I used stranded cotton floss, perle #5 cotton, Perle#8 cotton, wool, and hand dyed silk. Some of the thread on the base layer is a fine hand knitting wool I had to hand. It has a metallic fleck in it.
Here is a closer detail

Sharon, as usual thoroughly enjoying your posts. Will Rice Stitch be part of TAST any time soon?
Juno thanks for the comment about this section as I was thinking of adding it to TAST but as canvas stitch I was not sure how people would respond so you have given me the push I needed.
Sharon, I would have never thought of using canvas stitches on evenweave fabrics; love the effect you have achieved with rice stitch.
Very pretty. You are amazing! Have a great day! Your fan in NJ, USA
Marianne I used to use (i.e. 20 years ago!) canvas stitches on even weave linen all the time – but fell out of the habit as the surface stitches took over but have started to rediscover them again. Strange I like many of them online but don’t like working canvas – it’s so stiff I think I just have an aversion to them. Anywya I am experimenting a bit – when I have time with combining the both types
