This band illustrates two rows of stitches. The first is row up and down buttonhole stitch. The second is a variety of chain stitch called two colour chain stitch. You can find directions on page 57 of The Embroidery Stitch Bible by Betty Barnden.
As I explained when I introduced this section of the sampler many of these stitch samples where worked to demonstrate stitches for The Young Stitchers group at the local branch of the Embroiderers Guild which I co-ordinated at the time. This version of chain stitch is a lot of fun for young hands.

This section of the sampler is worked on tea towel linen which is not quite an even weave.

All samples are 15 cm (6 inches) wide and stitched together in one long band sampler.
The sampler is currently 44 ft 5 inches or 533 inches (1353.83 centimetres) or 14.8 yards (13.53 metres) long and still being added to.
