Twisted Satin Stitch, with and without a bead are two delightfully simple yet versatile stitches. Both can be sprinkled across an area or arranged in patterns to create fills. Worked in a radial arrangement it creates small flower like motifs. You can work Twisted Satin Stitch in a line with the stitches pointing end or work them side by side to build up a band.
Twisted Satin stitch and Twisted satin stitch with a bead. Both samples are worked using perle 8 thread.
How to work Twisted satin stitch
Bring your needle through to the front of the fabric.
Take a small bite of the fabric as if you were going to make a small straight stitch. Then bring the needle with the point emerging at the base of the straight stitch.
Pull the needle through so that it emerges at the base of the stitch you have just made.
Thread the needle under the straight stitch. Make sure you go under the thread only not through the fabric.
Pull the needle through under the stitch.
Take the needle back through the fabric at the top of the first stitch.
As you can see it can be arranged in different directions.
How to work Twisted Satin Stitch with a bead.
As a tip use a size 26 tapestry needle as the needle is thin enough to thread the bead on yet the eye is wide enough to thread a #8 or #5 perle thread.
Twisted satin stitch with a bead starts the same way as Twisted satin. Work steps 1 and 2.
On the third step before you thread the needle under the straight stitch thread a bead on to your thread.
Thread the needle under the straight stitch as you would in standard twisted satin stitch. Make sure you go under the thread only not through the fabric. Pull the needle through under the stitch.
These too can be arranged in patterns or sprinkled across an area. If you are making Christmas/holiday decorations this beaded version is a great way to sprinkle sparkle over a shape. It is quick and easy to do and if the thread you use is metallic it is very effective.

My experiments were inspired by Queenie’s twisted satin stitches:

Thank you,

It is so interesting, not only to learn the stitches, but also to read comments and other’s blogs to notice features to a stitch I had not seen myself. Here are my two version of the Twisted Satin stitch:

I gave the beaded version a try this week. Thanks for the instructions!

My samples are here: http://210920746822434353.weebly.com/1/post/2013/11/take-a-stitch-tuesday-2913-stitches-89-and-90.html and the beads don’t show up well as they are a cloudy clear bead — bad choice for photography!
Here are my samples for 89 and 90: http://hokkaidokudasai.blogspot.jp/2013/11/tast-89-twisted-satin-stitch-and-90.html
They were not difficult stitches to do and worked up fast. I’m sorry my photography doesn’t show them very well.
Thanks!
Thanks for the instructions Sharon. I really like this stitch. I did the stitch without the bead this week. I will save doing it with the bead for next Tuesday.

This is one of those stitches I learned and forgot all about it. In my post with old twisted satin stitches I share the details and progress photo’s of my old TAST 2007 sampler and links to more eye candy:
