As you can see I am still stitching my 2020 quilt blocks. Not sure I am going to continue calling it that as 2020 was such a pain of a year. So at the moment I am calling them my Hexagon blocks but I might just start calling them 2021 blocks. Anyway here is my hexagon quilt block 27 as usual click on the block and you can see a larger photo.
This was my starting point for block 27. I share my starting point as for anyone who is new to crazy quilting looks at a block as the main thing. With crazy quilting the embroidery and embellishments add another visual layer of complexity. This means that by the time a block is finished, it looks totally different. I hope that sharing a photo of the bare block helps beginners to not fret too much about how a block looks when you begin.
Feel free to use the block pattern if it appeals to you. My hexagons have 4-inch sides without seam allowances and measure 8 inches across from point-to-point without seam allowances.
The items and details on my hexagon quilt block 27
The 2020 challenge is to use 2,020 different items on a quilt by the end of the year 2020. Items can appear twice but must only be counted once. An item can be material, lace, braid etc or bead, do-dad, charm etc technique or stitch. To find out more about the challenge, you will find the guidelines and list of resources here I did not manage to complete the challenge as 2020 was such a disruptive year. But I am doing it anyway and will probably re-name the quilt to 2021.
Seed beads, bugle beads, and regular perle #8 and perle #5 thread iare not counted.

Have you enjoyed this series? If so you may be interested in a tutorial I have written on how to work decorative crazy quilt seams. The tutorial is a comprehensive tutorial that I converted to a pdf file (a link to the download is in the article). When I converted it I realised how comprehensive it was. At 19 pages of information it is a mini ebook and resource worth investigating!

I have also written a crazy quilting book
My book The Visual Guide to Crazy Quilting Design: Simple Stitches, Stunning Results shares detailed practical methods about how to design and make a crazy quilt. From fabric choice, to balancing colour, texture and pattern, in order to balance and direct the eye around the block. I cover how to stitch, build decorative seam treatments in interesting and creative ways. My book is profusely illustrated as my aim is to be practical and inspiring.
I saw the beautiful hexi block and followed the link here….having trouble navigating the site to find a picture of the 2020 quilt in its finished state. Could you help me find it… it’s similar to a quilt I’m working on and would like to see how yours turned out!! Thanks.
Dana 2020 threw me too much stuff to deal with – I think everyone has problems of one sort or another once Covid hit – anyway the quilt is not finished – I will finish it one day but at the moment I am working on other things
Guess that’s why I couldn’t find the picture of the finished quilt!! Lol. Thanks for the quick response. Your blocks are just beautiful!!
Regardless of when it is finished, Crazy Quilt is such an appropriate name for any quilt started in crazy 2020!
Caroyln I am inclined to agree with you!
Just beautiful!,,
Thanks Nora!
Oh, Sharon, you are so good at balancing colours, those two red ribbon embroidery flowers add a lot of pizzazz. I also love the covered button.
You are always such an inspiration.

Hi Queenie – thanks I just checked out your octagon quilt – it looks great I left a comment but not sure it went through
So rich and beautiful is the Hexagon. The quilt will be magnificent.
Thanks Maureen I just have to finish it!!!
I love the floral spray…part embroidery, part lace motifs. I needed the closeup to see the details. Gorgeous colours too.
Thanks Joyce- I enjoy stitching floral sprays
Such a sumptuous block. I haven’t stitched any crazy quilt patterns but I love looking. Perhaps one day! Amazing how you transform the hexagon.
Hi Jude thanks for the compliment – CQ is not so hard it’s the starting that is hard. Once started give yourself permission to play as there are no rules in CQ.
