Crazy Quilting Templates

Sharon B's CQ Stencils thumb

With my CQ Templates you can create hundreds of different patterns to embroider on your crazy quilt projects. They are easy to use, totally clear so you can position them easily and they are compact in your sewing box.

The plastic they are made of is solid but also recyclable and they are manufactured here in Australia.

As a stitcher who loves crazy quilting I designed these stencils with other crazy quilters in mind.

marking seam Sharon B's CQ StencilsThe set of 4 stencils are made of a clear recyclable plastic, so that you can position the stencil correctly on block before marking the line using a quilter’s pencil.

Using the stencils is easy. Just position the stencil in place and, holding it firmly with one hand, so that it does not shift, use a quilter’s pencil to trace along the edge of the template to create the pattern.

using Sharon B's CQ StencilsThis series of photos is a seam I recently worked on one of my blocks. As you can see I could position the heart shape easily.

This is what the finished seam looked like.

ebook cover Sharon B's CQ StencilsTo  show how the stencils could be used, I wrote an ebook and drafted out numerous patterns. Links to your ebook are sent to your paypal email.

I am sure once you start using my stencils as a template you will think of many more designs!

Here is a sneak peek inside the book showing you how you can design your own seam embellishments and  patterns.

When I designed the stencils I thought in terms of having enough space to tuck my favourite stitches, beads, small floral lace motifs and favourite silk ribbon embroidery flowers into the spaces in the patterns produced.

patterns created using Sharon B's CQ StencilsIn the ebook the patterns are drafted  to scale. This means that you can see what a seam might look like if you traced along the edge of the stencil.

patterns created using Sharon B's CQ StencilsAt first glance many patterns look large but the extra space gives your embroidery room to grow. In some of the patterns I have included space for buttons and large beads to be incorporated as people often get stumped on how to include larger items such as buttons in crazy quilting.

patterns created using Sharon B's CQ StencilsSince the stencils are clear this also makes them easy to flip over and a mirrored pattern. This aspect of their design adds tremendous versatility to their use.

Using the shapes found on the edge of each stencil you can create numerous seam embellishments but a key feature of these stencils is that you will find a number of curves and flourishes, with which, you can build the stems and vines of floral motifs. By using the flourish shapes, the curves of the paisley shape, heart shapes and by using segments of the oval and disk shapes, you can create numerous designs yourself.

using Sharon B's CQ Stencils using Sharon B's CQ StencilsAs you can see with the illustration, I used the edge of the flourish shape to create two soft curves which became the foundation for a little floral spray.

The flowers are buttons and I decorated the stems of this floral spray with detached chain stitch (also known as Lazy Daisy) and straight stitches.

In this sample I used hand dyed perle #5 cotton. As a finishing touch I added a few seed beads and a few small pearls.

I have kept the stencils small so that they fit easily into a sewing box. Anyone who knows me, knows I like things compact.  Their compact size means if you are travelling to a workshop or to a local stitching get together you are not cluttering up your supplies with lots of large templates.

I hope these stencils motivate people to discover your creativity.

This is another seam I have recently embroidered using the hexagon shape. Or I should say half of the hexagon shape.

I traced a line of half hexagons along the seam. I then embroidered them in threaded chain stitch using perle cotton #5. Next I added beads and bead tassels!

I would like to purchase your stencils. I am new to crazy quilting and learned of you through Allie Aller. I took her class on Craftsy and it is a terrific class. I have so much confidence now that I am embarking on a bedsize quilt for my granddaughter. Your stencils will help me enlarge my embellishing ideas.

Sharon do I need an e-reader or an I pad to read the stencils? I don’t have either of them . But I would like to buy the plastics and use the patterns too for the seams :)

    • sharonb says:

Hi Ati it is a pdf file so anyone can read it. Most computers have a pdf reader and you can get them free from Adobe. Also tablets have pdf apps that can read them easily.

My stencils arrived today in Louisiana, USA. I have looked at them and they look fabulous. That was quick service!!! Love the postcard you put in the package and how you presented them in the scrapbook paper was darling. I cannot find where my ebook is. Can you point me in the direction? Thanks a million and for those of you wondering if this is good buy, yes indeed it is!!!

  11. Sandra D in Joliet says:

My mailbox was like Christmas morning today! I got my stencils and also the lace I ordered from the lady on Etsy you told us about. Just excited. I went over each stencil and was pleased none were cracked or broke so they made their way from the UK intact. Now comes the hard part-deciding and planning my first crazy quilt. Maybe I should start with a pillow. I plan on starting it in October so I have time to gather fabrics and plan. I have plenty of beads and buttons and embroidery floss. Thank you for the great service!

  12. Nancy Kettler says:

How can I order these? I NEED THEM!!!

    Thanx

Sharon, My stencils arrived this morning and was so excited almost did not know what to do. I’m in the middle of your sumptuous class, with the last three wks to go. I already have a few blocks to work them into, along with a boho bag I have pieced. Wanting to do your class first before starting any of them.
I now again find myself not being able to download the e-book for ideas. I still can not get the stitch dictionary on my desk top computer, but was able to see them on my laptop. Some reason I am not able to even look at the e-book on my laptop. Any ideas would be appreciated, my friend with computer knowledge is in the hospital at this time. God wiling he will be home soon, any help would be great.

Thank you for all the time you have put into this for the rest of us to share.

    Thank you,
    Joyce Bannon

Sharon what is your favorite marking pencil? I have not found a wonderful one for me as yet. Any suggestions from any of you all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    • sharonb says:

I use those quilters pens that disappear, quilters chalk pencils and quilters pencils – it depends ont he fabric on the block – Basically I have a pile of them accumulated over the years and use what works on that block!

  16. Susan Brandli says:

    My stencils arrived today! Hooray!

    Thanks, Cheryl

  18. Susie Delewese says:

What would the shipping cost be to Ohio USA for 2 sets of your stencils.
This looks like the greatest thing since sliced bread!
    Thanks

    • sharonb says:

Susie the price is the same because they just weigh in as parcel letter and tis 6.50 if I pack them together they weigh in heavier and then go at parcel rate it is $13.70 so you can see its better to post 2 at the lower rate

Hello Sharon. I would love to purchase these templates, but do not have a paypal? account. I would be happy to email my credit card details, with my postal address in Victoria. Is this acceptable for you. I have not attempted a CQ before, and I think these templates will be invaluable. Claire.

    • sharonb says:

Claire sorry I only take Pay pal –

Thanks for your prompt reply Sharon. This dinosaur will give paypal a try. Claire

  45. Claire Turner says:

Hello Sharon. My stencils arrived yesterday thank you. Loved the William Morris type packaging. Can’t wait to start my first CQ project. I had no problem downloading the ebooks. Do you prefer antique style piecing, or foundation piecing for your blocks?

    • sharonb says:

Hi Clair thanks for letting me know they arrived OK, I use foundation piecing – ie sew and flip but sometimes I do hand piecing and sometimes I mix them a bit – there are no rules

  46. Shirley says:

I received my CQ stencils today & can already see the many uses for them,I can see them helping to mark for some of my free motion quilting as well.My grandmother had a set that my Grandfather had jimmied together for her,not as extensive as yours, but as CQ is my favorite type of quilting(I did my first in 1962 with a friend from Denmark showing me the basics) I know that I will use these for a long time.I have received nothing from the Paypal people re the download. Can the e-book just be sent to me via e-mail? Thank you,Shirley Sylvester,Canada

  47. Patricia Markley says:

Sharon, I received my stencils and they are great but I never received a link to download the ebook. I have checked my spam folder and looked back over all my old email and it is just not there. Could you please resend it to me. I previewed the pages that you had on the website and I know that it will be a valuable tool. Thank you.

  48. Tommie Cooper says:

I purchased the stencils shortly after they were first offered but before the availability if the e-book. Is it possible to obtain a copy of the suggested uses sheet?

The stencils were sent to me in Texas bit I now live in Colorado in case you want to check your order history. Thank you for your consideration.

  49. Gwenda Braniff says:

Hi Sharon. I sent you a private email hoping I did not delete iany answers from you without reading it. I have been trying to purchase your templates and the other stitch volumes 5′ 6′ and 7 in one order and find I do not have enough computer knowledge to do so . Could you please advise.
    Thank you

    Gwenda Braniff

  50. Lynne Pedersen says:

I also purchased my stencils shortly after they were offered but before the ebook came out. Would it be possible to get the ebook now?

  51. Marianne Squire Maszer says:

If you are on the fence about whether or not to order Sharon B’s CQ Stencils, jump over. I rarely used other stencils, I had spent $$ on. Since trying out Sharon’s templates, I rarely stitch without them and have sold my other ones. They are so versatile, fit in a small space, and my stitching is neater, and much more creative, thanks to her extensive free with purchase ebook. Also Sharon’s templates are acrylic and will last several lifetimes!! Thanks, Sharon for an answer to a stitcher’s prayers. Marianne in NJ, USA
