The Artist’s Toolkit is an interactive site that encourages users to explore visual elements of design such as line, colour, shape, movement and balance. It’s a very good educational resource.
In the first section “Watch”, an animation explains each design element. In “Find” the idea is look and see how it was applied in famous pieces of art and houses a bit of treasure hunt finding those principals at work in art works. Under “Create” you assemble your own composition using just that design principal and print the results.
As an online interactive educational resource it covers the key concepts in visual literacy and I am sure many textiles practitioners will find it useful. For those who are untrained it exposes them to key ideas in design and for those that are it never hurts to go back to the basics in order to refresh those ideas.
