For the Love of Stitching Sampler – Band 11

Band 11 is really two bands but they are so much the same that I have grouped them together.

Stitch:

This band illustrates experiments with whipped fly stitch.

Thread:

The first foundation row of fly stitch is worked in a hand dyed Danish cotton which is about the same thickness and weight as DMC perle 5 thread. The next foundation rows are a crochet cotton.

The rows are then whipped using hand dyed baby knitting wool.

All threads are hand dyed by me. The Danish cotton, was purchased in bulk from weavers supplies.

Dyes:

Procion cold water dyes for the cotton

Disperse dyes (also known as transfer dyes) on the synthetic threads such as baby wool.

Title Block

This area was added on a whim but became the name of the sampler as I was asked at a guild meeting by a very upright woman what the sampler was for. I answered it was simply for the love of stitching. I simply marked it there and then in pencil and stitched it on.

Stitch:

Title is worked in chain stitch and the border is buttonhole which has been whipped.

Thread:

Hand dyed Danish cotton which is about the same thickness and weight as DMC perle 5 thread.

Fabric:

This section of the sampler is a dress linen which is not quite an even weave, hand painted with procion cold water dyes.

Size:

All samples are 15 cm (6 inches) wide and stitched together in one long band sampler.
