Closed Buttonhole stitch sample on crazy quilting

Closed Buttonhole is a variety of Buttonhole stitch. You can use it as a decorative line on the edge of projects. It is a quick, simple stitch for crazy quilters to use, and worked row-upon-row, it makes a quick and interesting filling. Since the structure of Closed Buttonhole is similar to Triangular Buttonhole Stitch it is fun to alternate rows of the two stitches to create a broad band for the edge of items or use the two stitches arranged in patterns to fill areas of a design.

Above, I made the line of Closed buttonhole stitches in perle #8 thread above the silk ribbon roses. You can see this detail on block 70 of the

How to work Closed Buttonhole Stitch

Work Closed Buttonhole stitch along two imaginary parallel guide lines. Or mark two lines on the fabric using a water-soluble or fade-out fabric marker.

Bring the thread out on the lower line, insert the needle diagonally to the right on the upper line, with the needle emerging on the bottom line, pointing left. With the thread looped under the needle point, pull the needle through the fabric.

Take your needle to the top line, insert the needle at the top of the stitch you just created. Make a downward diagonal motion, with the needle emerging on the bottom line, pointing right. With the thread looped under the needle point, pull the needle through the fabric.
