Double Buttonhole Stitch is an often forgotten traditional stitch yet it is simple and useful. This stitch consists of two lines of Buttonhole stitch worked facing each other. As a result, it makes a great edging stitch because it is double the strength. You can not only use Double buttonhole as an edging stitch but you can also use it as a decorative stitch. It is simple to work and follows curves well. You can also combine it double buttonhole with couching. Use it to couch down thicker, bulky or novelty threads and it looks great to couch down or use over ribbons! Work Double Buttonhole row upon row or explore changing the spacing and height of the arms.
How to work Double Buttonhole Stitch
Start with a line of Buttonhole stitch. If you need a reminder on how to work buttonhole I have a tutorial here.
Turn your work 180 degrees, and work a second line of Buttonhole stitches offset by a thread or two. Aim to sit the arms of the stitch in the spaces created by the first line.

Here is a completed line of Double Buttonhole Stitch. I have used different coloured thread to demonstrate how the stitch is worked, but normally you would use the same thread.
