Description

Hedebo/Couronne Sticks

This Couronne, or Hedebo stick is handcrafted with care from the finest sustainably grown Australian and international plantation timber. The size is just perfect at 5.5 inches (140mm) long (about the size of a pen). There are 4 or 5 steps from around 12mm to around 5mm diameter. It will make a beautiful, yet practical addition to your sewing box that will last you for years to come.

The Couronne stick is turned with a comfortable handle on one end to ensure a secure grip. Use them in your Hardanger embroidery, or make rings for your contemporary embroidery designs.

And don’t worry, Jerry doesn’t use timbers that are on the CITES endangered timbers list so there will be no issues with sending these worldwide – all his timber is responsibly sourced. The Couronne sticks are finished and sealed, so don’t worry if you spill your tea or coffee on them.

Because they are hand-turned, each one is individual – so there may be some minor variation in shape and colour from the one displayed here.

So all up, these beautifully designed and hand-turned Couronne sticks make great gifts for the stitcher in your life, or for your own sewing box.

Where do Hedebo Sticks (Couronne Sticks) come from?

Couronne sticks — also known as Hedebo sticks are used to make embroidered rings in Hardanger embroidery or needle lace. They have been used since at least as far back as the early 1800s. They were used in Danish embroidery, notably from an area between Copenhagen and Roske known as the ‘heden’ or heath or moorland. The word ‘bo’ means to reside, so literally, the embroidery was done by people who lived on the heath — hence ‘Hedebo’ [source: Roger Buhr]. The other name for this tool is Couronne stick — a French word, meaning ‘crown’ — from the ring shape of the resulting embroidery rings. We make ours in our studio in Australia from sustainably sourced Australian timbers.
