Double Zig Zag Coral stitch step by step tutorial

Double Zig Zag Coral stitch is an interesting variety of Coral stitch. It is quite simply a development on Zig Zag Coral stitch. All versions of Coral stitch are based on twisted chain stitch. So this is a case of an offspring developing and moving away from the family line towards something that looks totally different from its ancestor.  If you need to refresh your memory on how to work a twisted chain there is a tutorial here. As you can see the mechanics of the stitch are the same. In other words the hand movement needed to make each coral stitch are same but the pattern is different.

How to work Double Zig Zag Coral Stitch

Work this stitch between two parallel lines from top to bottom.  Follow the line of the weave in the fabric or mark the lines use a dissolvable quilters pen. If you choose to use a pan make sure the lines are removable as they will not be covered with stitching.  With stitches like this I use the threads in the weave of the cloth as my guide. These step by step samples of Double Zig Zag Coral stitch are worked in perle #5 thread.

Double zig zag coral stitch step 1As you would with Zig zag Coral stitch bring your needle out on the left-hand side of the line and make a small twisted chain stitch by inserting the needle and having the point of the needle emerge a short space below the line as illustrated. Wrap the thread over the needle and under the point.  Pull the needle through the fabric. Double zig zag coral stitch step 2Move diagonally across your work, and make a twisted chain stitch as illustrated. Double zig zag coral stitch step 3Take your thread diagonally to the left-hand side of the line and make a twisted chain stitch. double zig zag coral stitch step 4Continue in this manner zig zagging down the line. At this stage you have created a line of regular Zig Zag Coral stitch. Tie off your work at the back.

Double zig zag coral stitch step 5

Work a second line of Zig Zag coral stitch off set to the first. I have worked the sample in a different colour so as the second journey can be seen easily. Although this is decorative you do not need to use two colours.

Double Zig Zag Coral stitch is fun and once you get in the rhythm it is quick to do. This stitch looks good in a thread with a firm twist such as cotton perle. Stranded cotton can make all the coral stitches look a bit lack lustre. It is also interesting to use thicker threads to create a border on your work. Or you can work Double Zig Zag Coral stitch row upon row to build up patterned fills. This is also a wonderful stitch to use to couch down braids, ribbon or novelty thread. This can give your which embroidery a contemporary twist. Double Zig Zag Coral stitch is also a surface embroidery stitch that you can easily add beads to, either in the diamond shapes it forms or use beads to tie the cross bars down. Simply put it is fun and I hope you enjoy experimenting with Double Zig Zag Coral stitch.
