Thread drops are known by a number of names such as thread keepers, floss keepers, thread organisers or floss drops which is a fun name that sounds like a lollie to me. I am sure that every hand embroiderer has at some stage had to deal with a tangled nest of threads in mystery colours.
Keeping embroidery threads organised can make your time stitching more enjoyable and one of the simplest tools to keep threads organised is a thread drop or floss keeper. Rather than having several skeins loose in your project bag, you can gather all the threads for a particular project onto one ring. You can arrange the drops on a ring by colour, thread number or even the order in which you expect to use them. They keep your threads organised and reduce tangling.
One thread drop holds one colour or type of thread. You can label each drop with the thread number, colour name or fibre type. Thread drops are useful when you’re working on a project with several colours or if you design your own projects they are a great way to see a colour scheme grouped together. I have seen some stitches build up a thread library kept on a book ring (that is what the small hole is for) Once on a ring you can flip through the colours to see what you need.
