TAST Week 33

Welcome to TAST Week 33. But before I announce the stitches for Week 33, I have a little announcement: Next week will be a catch-up or break week, whichever applies to you. I notice some people are struggling to keep up or are falling behind. Don’t worry, that’s why we have break weeks. So, if you need to catch up, this will be your week to do it — or you can simply relax and enjoy other stitching projects.  I just thought I would give everyone a heads-up on that. So save the date next Tuesday! 🙂

For Take a Stitch Tuesday Week 33, I am introducing a textured stitch called Whipped wheel. This stitch produces a raised ribbed circle. Until you try it you don’t know how much fun this stitch can be. This is one of my favourite textured stitches. If you look closely at much of my stitching you will find them peering out of all sorts of places. Whipped wheels are quick to work once you have mastered them. You can use Whipped wheels alone – as an accent stitch, a point of colour, an interesting texture, or they can be scattered over an area, almost like a powdered filling. Take a Stitch Tuesday Week 33 Beyond TAST

Whipped Spoke Stitchis another stitch I love. It is very close to Whipped wheel and you can easily work the two together. You can work it in lines or circles or as part of a border or simple freeform, as I have done in the sample above. I used hand-dyed cotton perle #5 thread for the Whipped Spoke stitch. Other stitches used in this sample are with French knots, Cast on stitch, Bullion knots, and whipped wheel stitch. You can find tutorials for all of these stitches in my Stitch Dictionary.

If you are new to hand embroidery the challenge is to learn the stitch and share what you have learned. If you are an experienced embroiderer, enjoy Beyond TAST and give your work a modern twist. And of course, share it online so beginners can see what can be done with a little imagination.
