Crazy Quilt Block 98 Pattern and Hand Embroidery Details

Crazy Quilt Block 98Crazy quilt block 98 is a dark block. If you are a new reader to this site the I Dropped the Button Box Quilt is set with blocks that are arranged by colour in diagonal lines. This block is part of a dark diagonal line that runs across the quilt.

My challenge with this quilt was to have all the crazy quilt blocks reading properly while also  pulling everything on the quilt from my stash!

How I hand embroidered the seams on Crazy Quilt Block 98

Crazy Quilt Block 98 detail 631This seam is embroidered with half Herringbone and half Cretan Stitch using a hand dyed silk thread before adding bugle beads.

Crazy Quilt Block 98 detail 633The edge of the velvet ribbon was decorated with detached chain stitches and bugle beads. The charm is a souvenir I collected in London. I took it off a key ring.

Crazy Quilt Block 98 detail 634This lace was added tot he block while I peace it. I picked out the pattern  with seed beads. Along  the edge I worked a line of half buttonhole wheels before adding seed beads to the middle of each one.

Crazy Quilt Block 98 detail 635This line of Chevron Stitch was worked in cotton perle #5 before using jewellery findings  as little flowers. Each is secured to the block with the seed bead in the middle.

Crazy Quilt Block 98 detail 636On this seam I worked a line of Feather Stitch before adding the seed beads.

Crazy Quilt Block 97 Pattern and Hand Embroidery Details

Crazy Quilt Block 97Crazy quilt block 97 is another favourite. As usual you can click on the photo to see a larger version. See the blue lace in the top left corner . It has a story attached to it.

I used some very old piece of lace which in junk shop in Oxford,  England.  I was browsing around the store when I spotted a roll of lace wrapped around a piece of broom handle. Someone had wound each piece of lace on to the broom handle and slipped a pin in to secure it then they had wound on another piece and slipped a pin in. They had done this until the roll was about 4 inches thick and the pins had now all rusted.

The wad of laces looked to me as if they were of 50’s vintage because that was what was on the outer layer. However since the pins had rusted,  there was no real way of knowing what was in there. At the time I was curious about it and when I expressed an interest the shop keeper removed two pieces from the roll to discover the lengths were about 15 cm (6 inches) long and in removing them the lace was likely to tear. She offered them to me for a couple of pounds and I jumped at it.

When I got back home I was delighted because these small pieces of lace got older as I carefully unwound them. I think they were samples from a lace maker as each was tagged. To my amazement I discovered as I unwound the samples they got older and they went back to the Victorian era if not older. Unfortunately they were all very badly damaged. The use of numerous pins to secure each piece of lace had caused rust staining,  and worse the samples were often torn.

To be honest that did not bother me as I wanted to use the lace for crazy quilting. If it had been  in good condition I would not have used them but since they were damaged I felt there was no harm if reclaimed for crazy quilting. I dyed the badly rust stained, repaired what was worth repairing and reclaimed what I could and made something of it.

I have used many of these laces on this quilt and they influenced this quilt in another important way. Because I wanted to use the scraps I had salvaged I decided to make the blocks the size they are. I felt the proportion of the blocks to the laces, highlighted them better than if they had been used on larger blocks. Also many were too small to use on larger blocks.

Crazy Quilt Block 96 Pattern and Hand Embroidery Details

Crazy quilt block 96Crazy quilt block 96 is one of my favourites as I enjoyed the colour scheme. As I have said in previous articles these blocks were all created from fabrics and embellishments in my stash. Sometimes when you have to pull from your stash you end up doing something different and selecting a colour scheme you would not normally work. That is what happened with this block.

The laces I used on the block are hand dyed and many of the threads too! As usual you can click on the photo to see a larger version.

Piece 4 is a patch that is nylon lace that is backed with a teal cotton fabric. The seam along the edge is decorated with feather stitch worked in hand dyed silk thread. I added blue beads to the arms of the stitch which gave it extra zest.

Crazy quilt block 96 detail 620This patch is covered with some small flowers that are worked in Detached chain stitch worked in a hand dyed cotton and fly stitch worked in rayon thread. I sprinkled French knots around the patch

Crazy quilt block 96 detail 621On this seam I worked a line of Tied Herringbone Stitch then using rayon ribbon floss I added the black straight stitches in the valleys of the row. Seed beads were added last.

Crazy quilt block 96 detail 622The lace was added to the seam on this block as I pieced it. I added beads.

Crazy quilt block 96 detail 623This is rayon lace was hand dyed with procion dyes.

Crazy quilt block 96 detail 624I worked a line of Chevron Stitch in cotton perle #5 before tucking small floral motifs in the valleys of the chevrons stitches. I made the flowers from Cast on Stitch, straight stitches for the stem and Detached Chain Stitches for the leaves.
